The engagement rate formula
Engagement rate by followers is the most quoted number. The formula is simple:
(Likes + Comments + Saves + Shares) / Followers x 100
If you also know how many accounts saw the post, engagement rate by reach is more accurate because it measures interaction against the people who actually saw it:
(Likes + Comments + Saves + Shares) / Reach x 100
What counts as a good engagement rate
- Under 1 percent: low. Worth revisiting content and timing.
- 1 to 3.5 percent: solid and typical for many accounts.
- 3.5 to 6 percent: strong. Your audience is paying attention.
- Above 6 percent: excellent, often seen on smaller, tight-knit accounts.
