The engagement rate formula

Engagement rate by followers is the most quoted number. The formula is simple:

(Likes + Comments + Saves + Shares) / Followers x 100

If you also know how many accounts saw the post, engagement rate by reach is more accurate because it measures interaction against the people who actually saw it:

(Likes + Comments + Saves + Shares) / Reach x 100

What counts as a good engagement rate

  • Under 1 percent: low. Worth revisiting content and timing.
  • 1 to 3.5 percent: solid and typical for many accounts.
  • 3.5 to 6 percent: strong. Your audience is paying attention.
  • Above 6 percent: excellent, often seen on smaller, tight-knit accounts.

FAQ

Engagement rate, answered.

How do you calculate engagement rate?
The most common formula is engagement rate by followers: add up likes, comments, saves and shares on a post, divide by your follower count, then multiply by 100. For a more accurate read, use engagement rate by reach, which divides total engagements by the number of accounts that actually saw the post.
What is a good engagement rate?
It varies by platform and account size. As a rough guide, under 1 percent is low, 1 to 3.5 percent is solid, 3.5 to 6 percent is strong and above 6 percent is excellent. Smaller accounts usually see higher rates than large ones, so compare against accounts of a similar size.
Should I use engagement rate by followers or by reach?
By followers is the standard for comparing accounts and is easy to calculate. By reach is more accurate for judging how a specific post performed, because it measures engagement against the people who actually saw it. This tool calculates both when you enter reach.
Does this calculator store my numbers?
No. The calculation happens in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to a server or saved anywhere.
